Wicker Baskets

Wicker is a way of weaving, not a material. Ours is rattan reed, cut into strips, soaked and worked by hand over a wood bottom and up to a hardwood rim, with leather handles riveted through the weave where a basket is meant to be carried. No molds and no machines: Old Order Amish families on the Iowa-Missouri border weave every basket on this page, and the weaver signs the bottom before it leaves the farm. If the weaver is under eighteen, their age is written beside the signature.

Sizes are printed for the outside at the rim, with the height measured without handles. Most baskets come in three trims, Plain, Wine & Blue and Wine & Green, woven in as dyed reed rather than painted on. Lids and liners are sold separately unless the page says one is included; the lid made for a basket lifts off, and the hand-sewn cotton liner made for it is sold on the same page and can be added any time. Caring for a wicker basket

Dust it with a soft brush; wipe it with a slightly damp cloth when it needs more. The liners are pre-shrunk cotton and wash by machine. If a basket ever needs a repair, the family that wove it repairs it under the lifetime guarantee.
