Corner Baskets, Woven By Hand

A corner basket sits into the square corner where two walls or two sides of a shelf meet, and it makes use of space that usually goes to waste. The corner pieces here are handwoven by Old Order Amish families on the Iowa-Missouri border: corner baskets woven to the size you choose, with a curved front or a flat front, a bread box shaped for the corner of a counter, and a hamper for the corner of a floor. One owner wrote, "They add beauty to a wasted space in our kitchen."

Every piece is handwoven and signed by the family member who wove it. Protective feet and an engraved solid brass plate are optional on each one.

Which Corner Piece Fits Your Corner

The Corner Basket: a curved front

The corner basket has two equal straight sides that meet at a square back corner and a curved front, a quarter of a circle, so every point along the front is one side length from the back corner. It reaches farther forward at its center than a flat front would, which suits a corner shelf with a rounded edge or an open corner. You choose the length of each side, from 4 to 26 inches, and the height, from 3 to 24 inches, in whole inches.

The Triangle Basket: a flat front

The triangle basket has the same square back corner and two equal sides, with a flat front about 1.4 times the side: 12 inch sides make a front just over 16 inches, and 16 inch sides make one about 23 inches. It is the one for a shelf with a straight edge, or a corner cabinet with a door that closes in front of the basket. It is sized the same way, 4 to 26 inches a side and 3 to 24 inches tall.

The Amish Corner Bread Box: the corner of the counter

The Amish Corner Bread Box is 16 by 15 inches overall and 8 1/2 inches tall, cut at the back to sit into the corner of a counter, and it holds two loaves or more. Its solid wood lid opens on two black hinges, and closed, it makes a flat shelf on top. One owner wrote, "Fits the corner of my kitchen counter perfectly and my dog cannot open it!"

The Corner Hamper: the corner of the floor

The Corner Hamper stands 17 1/4 inches along each wall and 26 1/2 inches tall. Its lift-off solid wood lid comes with it. A cloth liner sewn for its shape is optional on its page.

How to measure a corner

Measure along each wall from the back corner to the front edge of the shelf or the space. That is the side length you order, and both sides are always the same. For the curved corner basket, the curve reaches one full side length out from the back corner at its center. The flat front of the triangle basket sits closer to the back corner, which is why it is the one for a cabinet door.

Sizes are the outside, measured across the top, and a handwoven basket varies about half an inch either way, a little more on a large one. Any corner of a room works, since the two sides are the same length. For a corner whose two sides are not equal, there is also the rectangle basket, for one or both walls.

Lids, handles and trims

A lift-off lid is optional on both the corner and the triangle basket, and so is a leather pull handle centered on the front for sliding the basket out of a shelf. The trim on the baskets you size is a band woven around the middle with a little at the top, in wine, blue or green, more than one color, or none for a plain basket. The bread box and the hamper come in Plain, Wine & Blue or Wine & Green trim.

Woven to order, shipped free

The baskets you size are woven to order, so they take a few weeks, longer than a piece that is ready in the Shipping Barn. Every order ships free with no prices in the box and a free gift message at checkout, and every basket carries the lifetime guarantee.
