An Amish sewing basket, or sewing box, is a handwoven wicker box built to hold the tools of hand work where you use them: beside the chair, on the sewing table, or carried to a quilting circle. Ours are woven from rattan reed over a solid hardwood bottom, with hardwood lids and drawers where there are any, by Old Order Amish families on the Iowa-Missouri border, and each one is signed by the weaver who made it.

The boxes with a pull-out drawer under a lidded top are the Craft & Sewing Organizer (11 1/2 x 8 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches), the Large Sewing & Craft Basket (15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 7 1/2), the Extra Large Sewing & Craft Box (17 x 11 1/2 x 12 1/2) and the Large Sewing Chest (18 x 13 1/2 x 16 1/2, on legs, with a lift-off lid). The Vintage Sewing Basket has a divided tray on top and 25 thread pegs underneath. The round baskets with a lid are the Antique Styled Sewing Basket on its 12 1/2 inch stand, and the Round Sewing & Knitting Basket on the floor. Grandma's Sewing Box is the old-style box on legs with a double-hinged lid. The Craft Caddy is the open tote with leather handles, and the Amish Mending Basket is the small round one for the darning.

The Antique Styled Sewing Basket: round, lidded, at chair height

The Antique Styled Sewing Basket is a 14 inch round basket, 9 inches deep, with a lid and two wooden swing handles, set on a separate 12 1/2 inch stand so it sits at chair height, 21 inches overall. Lift the basket off the stand and carry it to the next room. The stand's three legs are screwed into its base. The Large Sewing & Craft Basket: a lidded top and a drawer

The Large Sewing & Craft Basket is 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches: a top compartment under the lid, divided into sections for the notions, and an open pull-out drawer below for the fabric and the project. Protective feet and a brass plate are optional. "Very well made," Susan wrote in 2025. "Lots of room."

The Vintage Sewing Basket: a divided tray and 25 thread pegs

The Vintage Sewing Basket is 13 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 7 inches under a solid wood lid. A nested tray with dividers holds the notions on top; under it, 25 removable dowel pegs hold spools of thread. Leather strap handles carry it. Feet and a brass plate optional. "It's the perfect size for all of my sewing items," Julie wrote in 2025.

The Craft & Sewing Organizer: the smaller drawer box

The Craft & Sewing Organizer is 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, the same lidded-top-and-drawer design at tabletop size. Feet and a brass plate optional. Isaac, 2026: "This sewing basket was immaculately crafted and radiated care."

Grandma's Sewing Box: the old-style box on legs

Grandma's Sewing Box is 14 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches and 18 inches tall on its legs, with a double-hinged lid that opens from either side, a solid wooden handle, and one open box inside. It is the box a grandmother kept beside her chair. A brass plate is optional. "I love everything about this sewing basket," Martha wrote in 2025. "It will be a favored family heirloom."

The Craft Caddy: open, with leather handles

The Craft Caddy is 17 3/4 x 10 x 6 inches, open, with wide leather handles: the basket for a project that moves, for kids' crafts, paints and patterns. A cloth liner, a custom-fit lid, protective feet, the Yarn Buddy strap and a brass plate are each optional. "It's a great size for crafting," Sandra wrote in 2026. "I can observe how the basket is made with care and precision."

The Extra Large Sewing & Craft Box: the biggest box

The Extra Large Sewing & Craft Box is 17 x 11 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches: a hinged lid over a deep top compartment and, below it, a 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch woven drawer basket that pulls out, with leather carry handles on the ends. Feet and a brass plate optional. "It is so well made and aesthetically pleasing," Julia wrote in 2025.

The Round Sewing & Knitting Basket: the antique stand's basket, on the floor

The Round Sewing & Knitting Basket is 14 inches across and 9 deep, with a lid and wooden swinging handles that fold down out of the way: the same basket as the antique stand, without the stand. The basket liner, the interior tray basket and its liner, the 9-peg thread tray, the Yarn Buddy, feet and a brass plate are the options.

The Large Sewing Chest: furniture, with a drawer

The Large Sewing Chest is 18 x 13 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches on wooden legs: a lift-off lid over a deep top compartment and a full-length drawer below. A brass plate is optional. "The craftsmanship is unbelievable," Linda wrote in 2025. "It shows off like a piece of furniture!"

The Amish Mending Basket: the small round one

The Amish Mending Basket is 11 1/2 inches across and 5 deep, round and tapered with a flat bottom: scissors, thread, buttons and the mending in one basket. A round wooden lid, a cotton liner, feet and a brass plate are options.

Drawers, trays and thread pegs

The drawer boxes give you two spaces: a top compartment under the lid and a woven drawer that pulls out below. In the Large Sewing & Craft Basket the top is divided into sections, a long one in front for scissors and a tape measure and smaller ones behind for the notions, and the drawer is one open basket for fabric and the project. The drawer slides in a wooden frame. The Vintage Sewing Basket is the sorted one: its tray on little legs lifts out with the notions in their sections, and the 25 pegs underneath keep every spool upright and findable. The two round baskets take the same insides as options: a tray basket that nests in the top with a cloth liner made for it, or a 9-peg thread tray.

The stand

The Antique Styled Sewing Basket's stand is a separate wooden tripod, 12 1/2 inches tall, with its three legs screwed into the base, and the basket sits on the post and lifts off to carry.

The bottom of every basket, and the lid where there is one, is solid hardwood; the drawers and trays are woven baskets in hardwood frames. The walls are rattan reed woven by hand over hardwood posts and finished with a hand-applied stain. Trims, restock and care

Each piece comes in three trims: Plain, the natural reed; Wine & Blue; and Wine & Green, a pine green. The color is woven in as dyed reed, not painted on. The families weave one basket at a time, and the notify-me button on each page emails you the day the first one is finished. Care is simple: dust it with a soft cloth, and once a year or so a light spray of lemon oil feeds the reed.
