How many eggs does the small egg basket hold?

How is the handle made?

Every egg basket has a fixed handle. The basket is built on two round wood hoops set crosswise: one is the rim, and the other rises over the top as the handle and runs under the basket as its center rib.

Does the egg basket have a wood bottom?

No. It is fully woven over its two wood hoops, with a rounded bottom instead of a flat wood base, the traditional melon basket shape. The weaver signs one of the narrow wooden strands, on the side or the bottom.

What does Plain mean, and what options are there?

Plain means no colored trim: every egg basket carries the same warm stain. An engraved solid brass plate is the option on this page.

Are the measurements inside or outside?

Every measurement we publish is the outside of the basket, measured across the top where it is widest.

How long does shipping take?

Standard free shipping arrives in 3 to 5 weekdays. Finished baskets in the Shipping Barn are sent out right away. Rush delivery is delivered in 2 to 4 weekdays. Special orders and custom sizes take 3 to 4 extra weeks before shipping.

This Amish handmade Egg Basket is a great accent piece for any decor. Sometimes referred to as a Melon Basket, this small egg collecting basket is 9 inches across, the size for children learning to gather eggs and for a backyard flock of a few hens. This egg basket can hold up to 36 eggs. It is built on two round wood hoops set crosswise: one forms the rim, and the other rises over the top as the handle and runs under the basket as its center rib, so the handle is fixed in place and is part of the frame. The 9 inch height is measured to the top of that handle. Around the hoops the basket is fully woven, rim to rounded bottom, and that melon shape keeps fresh eggs from rolling into each other on the walk back from the hen house. It is perfect for many uses beyond eggs, from using as a fruit bowl or adding greenery to an Easter basket filled with goodies for a little one. The sturdy woven construction of this egg gathering basket makes it an heirloom quality piece that can be passed down for generations.
