Chili Soup

This week’s recipe comes from Mrs. Ernest (Naomi) Yoder. Naomi has always enjoyed cooking meals that bring everyone to the table, and this chili soup is one she has made for many years. It is the kind of recipe that shows up at Sunday suppers, winter evenings with neighbors, and busy days when something filling is needed without much fuss.   She first wrote down this recipe after making it for a group of relatives who stopped by unexpectedly. The simple ingredients make it easy to prepare, and the touch of brown sugar gives it a flavor that many families in her district enjoy. Naomi mentioned that she often adds a bit more tomato juice and a little less flour, which is a reminder that Amish home cooking is always shaped by the cook’s own hand and taste. It is a dependable, comforting soup that has earned a place in her family’s collection of favorites.
