About This Basket

  • Handcrafted Quality: Rattan reed handwoven over a wood bottom, with a wrapped hardwood rim, a solid wood lift-off lid with a leather pull, two leather swing handles, and a solid wood shelf on three turned legs that stacks the second pie, by an Old Order Amish family on the Iowa-Missouri border, and signed by the weaver who made it.
  • The Two-Pie Size: 14 inches across outside and 12 1/2 inside, 7 1/2 inches tall in two levels of 3 inches: an 11 inch plate on the shelf and a 9 1/2 inch pan below it, or a pan up to 10 1/4 inches at the rim, because the shelf legs stand inside the rim.
  • Room For A 10 1/4 Inch Pie Plate: The lower plate sits between the legs of the shelf, and a pie plate up to 10 1/4 inches across its rim fits under it. Lift the shelf out and it carries one tall dish, or a whole dinner.
  • Measures: 14" diameter x 7 1/2" tall; 12 1/2" inside; two 3" levels. About 5 pounds empty. Contents not included.
  • Three Trim Colors: Choose Plain, Wine & Blue, or Wine & Green. The color is woven in as dyed reed, not painted on, and on the plain finish the stain takes to each piece of wood in its own way.
  • Optional Extras: A hand-sewn cotton liner made for this carrier, protective feet and an engraved solid brass plate are each optional and sold right on this page. The carrier ships unlined and is complete without them.
  • American Heritage: Handwoven in the USA and signed by the Amish weaver who made it. Backed by our lifetime guarantee, with free shipping and no-questions returns on every order.

Rebecca found that "it fits two pie dishes that are 10.25 inch outer diameter"; Tracy's "holds my 9.5" pie plate withe enough room to remove pie safely." Emily saw what the shelf does: "The inside has a clever footed wooden shelf so that two pies fit easily. And they won’t slop around inside the basket, either!"

The solid wood in the lid, the shelf and the bottom is why it sits flat on a car seat and weighs about five pounds before the pies go in; Milissa found "The basket sits flat without a wobble and the lid does too." Peggy took hers to church and was pleased with "how well the pies stayed in place without getting damaged". Beyond pie day, Lynda found "plenty of room for a complete dinner for 4 making transportation a breeze", and Martha carries "several plates of cupcakes to parties".

The sizes are the outside of the rim. For one pie, there is also the Single Pie Carrier, the same 14 inch basket at 4 1/2 inches tall; for three pies, the Triple Pie Basket; for this two-pie basket with swinging wood handles instead of leather, the Wood Handled Pie Carrier. The rest of the family is on the pie carriers page.

An Old Order Amish family weaves it by hand on the Iowa-Missouri border, in the same community as the rest of our kitchen baskets, and the weaver signs the bottom before it leaves the farm. Standard shipping is free, and rush delivery is offered at checkout when a birthday or Christmas is close. It ships gift-ready, with no prices in the box, a free gift note at checkout, and a short letter about the family who wove it. Like every basket we sell, it carries our lifetime guarantee, and returns are no questions asked.
