About This Basket

  • Handcrafted Quality: Rattan reed handwoven over a solid wood bottom with a wrapped rim, a lift-off solid wood lid with a leather pull that sits down inside the rim, and two genuine steerhide leather strap handles riveted through the weave, by an Old Order Amish family on the Iowa-Missouri border, and signed by the weaver who made it.
  • The Family Size: 18 x 13 inches and 10 inches tall: a picnic for four, with the legged wood shelf that comes with it standing inside so the plates and flatware ride underneath and the food rides on top. The shelf lifts straight out when a tall dish needs the full depth.
  • No Latch, No Need: The solid wood lid stays closed on its own, the straps pass over it when you carry the basket, and the lid sits down inside the rim so it cannot slide off on the walk to the blanket.
  • Measures: 18" x 13" x 10" tall. The shelf is included; contents are not.
  • Three Trim Colors: Choose Plain, Wine & Blue, or Wine & Green. The color is woven in as dyed reed, not painted on, and on the plain finish the stain takes to each piece of wood in its own way.
  • Optional Extras: A picnic serving set for 2 or 4 (9 inch melamine plates, 12 ounce tumblers and stainless flatware fitted to the lid), a wine and cheese serving set, a hand-sewn cloth liner in cream, wine, blue or green, an engraved solid brass plate and protective feet are each optional and sold right on this page. The basket ships unlined and empty, and is complete without them.
  • American Heritage: Handwoven in the USA and signed by the Amish weaver who made it. Backed by our lifetime guarantee, with free shipping and no-questions returns on every order.

Lynda, in 2021, on the lid: "LOVE that the lid sits down in the basket so that it does not slid off when carrying it." Meghan found it "just the right shape and size for packing enough food and drink for a big, sumptuous meal".

On the shelf inside, Lee: "The little table included is very functional and adds an extra storage space." Lisa: "The tray inside maximizes space." Barb gave one to her daughter's family: "it is a great size and has all the necessities neatly stowed for a simple and easy picnic packing". Joan "purchased every add-on for the basket for my family of four". Sharon, on the rest of the year: "use them for everything except a picnic. They are an everything special basket."

It is the wedding and shower gift of the family: Lori's "It was a wedding gift for my son and his bride. They loved it!", and Maureen's bride and groom "were tickled to seeing the personalization plate on their basket which included their names and wedding date". The sizes are outside measurements. For five or six, the Large Picnic Basket is the next size up with the same shelf; all the sizes are on the picnic baskets page.

An Old Order Amish family weaves it by hand on the Iowa-Missouri border, in the same community as the rest of our picnic baskets, and signs the bottom before it leaves the farm. Standard shipping is free, and rush delivery is offered at checkout when a wedding or a birthday is close. It ships gift-ready, with no prices in the box, a free gift note at checkout, and a short letter about the family who made it. Like every basket we sell, it carries our lifetime guarantee, and returns are no questions asked.
